Cross Country Travel Series: New Mexico

Destination: Albuquerque, New Mexico

Our second real stop on the trip was in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  We have family in New Mexico (Hey Dawn and Tal!) so we wanted to stop and see them since we have never visited before.  The view driving into Albuquerque was phenomenal.  The mountains were absolutely gorgeous and driving in at sunset meant that the sun was reflecting off of them.  I took so many pictures just from driving in the car.  It wasn’t extremely hot when we visited either which was nice since us Upstate New Yorkers aren’t too used to over 100 degree temperatures.  While we were in Albuquerque the first night, we went to our cousins’ house to have dinner with everyone there.  They prepared some authentic New Mexican food and the enchiladas were quite possibly the best food I have ever had.  My mom got the recipe so now we have them occasionally at home in New York.

The next day we planned to go to the Sandia Mountains and go hiking.  There is a tram that can be taken up the mountain so we planned to do that and then hike around the mountain.  Some people decide to hike up and down the mountain but we didn’t think it was a good idea since we weren’t in the best shape to hike that much in the high altitude.  The tram ride was a little scary for me, since I did not like being in a little clear box suspended over mountains but I survived it!  Hiking around the top of the mountain was my absolute favorite.  It was so much fun! The only thing to be concerned about at this high altitude (which you probably know if you’re an experienced hiker) is how the storms will move in very quickly so it’s important to be attentive to the weather at all times.  After our hike, we went to dinner at a restaurant which I cannot remember the name of and my mom cannot either so we are working on further investigating what it is called and then I will update it on this post! Update: It was Taco Cabana!! It was really good but I forgot everything about the place except for the food since I was so hangry when I got there (lol).  I would definitely go there again though!

All in all, I really enjoyed this location.  Albuquerque was beautiful and the houses in this area were so different from the style of New York.  Riding the tram and hiking the Sandia Mountains was an amazing experience.
